What qualifications do your assessors have?
Our assessors are qualified Specialist Teachers for SpLDs and they have an up to date Assessment Practicing Certficate (APC). Their assessment practicing certificate has been awarded by either PATOSS (the professional association of teachers of students with specific learning difficulties) or the BDA (British Dyslexia Assocation) which is recognised by SASC (SpLD Assessment Standard Committee)
Why have an assessment for dyslexia?
An assessment can be useful to determine the strengths and weaknesses of a learners profile. This information can then be used to support progress and develop self belief in the individual. Having a report shared with teachers or a workplace can help to develop a clear understanding of the learner and put support in place. In addition:
- To apply for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) at university. This can give you access to specialist equpiment, assistive software and 1-1 study skills support.
- To use as evidence for Exam Access Arrangements whilst studying at college, university or for professional qualifications.
- To apply for Exam Access Arrangements at school or college. You will need to contact the SENCO prior to the assessment as this is a JCQ requirement.
- To provide more information for employers so that they can make Reasonable Adjustments for an employee with specific difficulties.
What happens during a dyslexia assessment?
The SpLD assessor will start by explaining the process of how the SpLD assessment will be conducted and they will listen to the concerns of the individual. Then the SpLD assessment will begin with the assessor carrying out a series of tests to explore aspects of underlying ability such as:
- Reading, writing and spelling
- Handwriting and fine motor skills
- Underlying learning skills: phonological awareness, speed of processing and memory, speech and language and auditory processing.
The assessments takes 2-3 hours in length and you can have breaks. The report will be written up and sent to you within a maximum of 10 working days.
Where does a dyslexia assessment take place?
We are able to offer online assessments via video calling platforms such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom and at our offices across the UK. We may be able to offer face to face assessments in the home around Newport, Cardiff, Swansea, Port Talbot, Bridgend, Avergavenny, Merthyr Tydfil, Ross-on-Wye, Monmouth, Hereford, Gloucester, Worcester, Cheltenham, Birmingham and Bristol.
How do I book a dyslexia assessment?
You can book a dyslexia assessment by calling our office on 01633 660 632 or emailing our admin team at admin@accessforstudents.co.uk
Do I need to prepare anything for the assessment?
You will be asked to complete a series of pre-assessment questionnaires before the assessment. This will ask for a background history about your education and/or work, and ask details about any dyslexic type difficulites. This will help the SpLD Assessor prepare for the assessment. You can ask family or friends for help filling in the pre-assessment questionnaires.
